What Is Blackjack?

Blackjack is a casino card game available at Casino Days, played with one to eight decks of standard 52 cards. The number of decks can impact the odds and strategies you can leverage, but overall, it does not affect the rules and gameplay of the game. The goal is to get a hand as close as possible to a total value of 21. Coming out victorious with a regular hand pays out 1:1 your bet, and winning with a Blackjack (an Ace and a 10-value card) pays out 3:2 your bet.

When playing, it’s always good to leverage a basic blackjack strategy, as well as know the hands in blackjack. It’s also extremely important to know when to Hit (get another card), Stand (signal you’re happy with your hand), and Double Down (get just one more card to potentially get 2x the bet). • Hit, Stand, Double down - The three key decisions in this game, as outlined in the previous paragraph
• Split - Turn a pair (for e.g. 8+8) into two hands, potentially doubling your chances of victory, but remember that you’ll need to place the same bet again.
• Insurance - This is a side bet available with some blackjack variants, available only when the dealer’s exposed card is an ace. Placing this bet predicts that the dealer’s hand will result in a Blackjack, which pays out 2:1 if guessed right.
• Push - When both the players’ and the dealer’s hands are 21. When this happens, your bet is returned back.
• Surrender - When the odds aren’t in your favour, some variants allow you to fold and get ready to play another round.

Blackjack Glossary

• Bust: When your hand total exceeds 21, resulting in an automatic loss.
• Push: A tie. Your hand and the dealer's hand have the same value, and your bet is returned to you.
• Hard Hand: A hand that either does not contain an Ace, or contains an Ace that must be counted as 1 (e.g., 10-6-A).
• Soft Hand: A hand that includes an Ace being counted as 11 (e.g., A-6 is a "Soft 17").
• Insurance: A side bet offered only when the dealer's upcard is an Ace. You are betting that the dealer has blackjack. It pays 2:1 but generally has a high house edge and is not recommended by basic strategy.
• House Edge: The built-in mathematical advantage the casino has in any game. In blackjack, this can be minimized to under 0.5% with perfect basic strategy.

Blackjack Variants

Not all blackjack games are created equal. Subtle rule changes can affect the game's strategy and house edge. The two most common variants are American and European Blackjack. The main difference is that in American Blackjack, the dealer "Peeks" for blackjack. This means if their upcard is an Ace or a 10-value card, they will check their hole card for a 21. If they have it, the hand ends immediately, saving you from making additional bets (like doubling or splitting) on a hand you were destined to lose. In European Blackjack, the dealer does not peek and only receives their second card after all players have finished playing their hands.

Another critical rule to watch for is "Dealer Stands on Soft 17." A "Soft 17" is a hand that totals 17 but includes an Ace counted as 11 (e.g., Ace-6). A game where the "Dealer Stands on Soft 17" is slightly better for the player than a game where the dealer must "Hit on Soft 17." Finally, the number of decks used (from a single deck to eight) also affects the odds, with fewer decks generally being slightly more favourable to the player. 

Card Values, Payouts & House Edge

Cards 2-10 are worth their face value, face cards are valued at 10, and the Ace can be worth 1 or 11. The best Soft Hand is an ace and a 9, which can be 10 or 20. The RTP of the standard game is 99,43%, which is one of the highest of all casino games, and the payouts are as follows:

Coloured Pair

A lesser version of the Perfect Pair, a Coloured Pair is for cards from the same colour, but different suits (e.g. King of Diamonds and King of Hearts). Coloured Pair pays out 12:1.

Mixed Pair

Mixed pairs are made of a pair of cards from different coloured suites (e.g. King of Hearts and King of Spades). This side bet pays out 6:1.

Three of a Kind

As the name suggests, this side bet revolves around having three cards of the same number. This side bet pays out 30:1

Suited Three of a Kind

When you get three cards of the same kind and suit, it’s called Suited Three of a Kind. This is the highest-paying side bet, usually paying out 100:1.

Straight

A straight in blackjack is when you get dealt three cards in numerical order (e.g. 4, 5, and 6). Straight pays out 10:1.

Flush

A flush is when you get three cards of the same suit (e.g. 2 of Spades, 5 of Spades, and King of Spades). Getting a Flush nets you 5:1.

Straight Flush

A straight flush is when you get three cards in numerical order for the same suit (e.g., 4 of Spades, 5 of Spades, and 6 of Spades). This side bet awards 40:1.
